PERSONAL STORY

Music has always been calling Brynda McCurdy, and her journey proves she always answers. From her early years in Virginia, where she sang with her gospel-singing family, to her inspiring return to music later in life, Brynda’s story is one of passion and resilience.

Brynda began singing with her parents and sisters at age 2, performing in the Wright Family Singers along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. The music never really left her, even when she paused her musical path to pursue her education, earning a master’s from Virginia Commonwealth University and a doctorate in immunology and microbiology from Wayne State University. She built a distinguished career, becoming Laboratory Director at the Detroit District Office of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Though Brynda put her music on hold, life had other plans. She moved to Windsor, Ontario, where her love for singing was reignited. A call to perform in Ragtime with the Windsor Light Music Theatre opened a new chapter, leading to her involvement in more musicals and eventually to jazz, where she established the group Black Russian. This journey eventually brought her to record her debut album, “Follow My Heart,” a unique blend of gospel, jazz, reggae, and R&B that tells her story, spanning the music of her childhood and her discovery of new sounds.
